Conservation
Leggett & Platt continues to aggressively pursue conservation opportunities through the company. We control the cost of finished goods using the best practices to assure that our customers receive the finest products at competitive costs with the least impact on the environment. Energy teams at many Leggett locations serve as a ‘conscience for conservation’ to our employee partners.

Water Conservation

Leggett converted its washer process from high-temperature, multi stage systems to a low temperature solution by changing the water chemistry. The new process has reduced both energy and water usage, eliminated landfill requirements, and increased production through-put.

Compressed Air Optimization

Industrial and manufacturing operations typically require compressed air for process and assembly purposes. Leggett & Platt’s compressed air optimization program has reduced the company's overall demand of electricity by removing unneeded electric motor load while increasing operational efficiency.

Lighting Retrofits

Most of the Leggett manufacturing and warehouse facilities use high-efficiency lighting systems that have reduced lighting energy consumption by almost 50% and improved light levels.

Auxiliary Power Units

Leggett maintains a fleet of over the road tractor trailers with sleeper cabs. The majority of these tractors now use auxiliary power units that provide HVAC and power to the cab in lieu of idling the truck's massive engine. The APU program has reduced diesel fuel consumption and maintenance requirements.

Other Energy Reduction Programs

Other initiatives that have reduced our need for energy include boiler improvements, low temperature and eco-friendly metal cleaning processes, power conditioning initiatives and increasing automation controls. Leggett’s energy conservation program has saved over 200 billion BTUs per year. This is the equivalent of:

  • Green house gas emissions from 7,875 passenger vehicles
  • CO2 emissions from
    1. 4.9 million gallons of gasoline
    2. 100,000 barrels of oil
    3. 5,695 homes
