Hanes Dye & Finishing – Winston-Salem, NC
Hanes Dye & Finishing is a member of Leggett & Platt’s Residential Furnishings Segment/Fabric & Carpet Underlay Group. Manufacturing operations for the group include commission dye and finishing, and conversion of a variety of home furnishing, pocketing/apparel, and industrial products.
Hanes Geo is a business devoted to the distribution of a wide range of geo-components and erosion control products. In addition, they are an assembler of silt, sand, and snow fence products.
Together, the two facilities have identified the following environmental goals for 2015:
REDUCE LANDFILL WASTE: Reduce solid waste sent to the landfill by 6% from 2014 levels.
- Increase employee awareness and company support for recycling.
REDUCE NATURAL RESOURCE USE: Achieve $20,000 annual savings in reduced water and steam consumption on Frame 4.
- Change SOP for QST Polywear 260 Wet Low program as to not use the frame pre-washer.
REDUCE NATURAL RESOURCE USE: Achieve $11,000 savings from fuel usage (coal).
- Use natural gas-fired Quickwater units (95% efficiency) for last quarter of 2015.
- This will also reduce CO2 emissions.
REDUCE AIR EMISSIONS: Achieve board approval and regulatory permitting for replacement of existing coal-fired boilers with natural gas-fired boilers.
- Potential to save 650 metric tons of CO2 based on 2015 YTD usage.
Social responsibility means a lot to the Hanes facilities; they have participated in a bi-annual stream clean up at Peters Creek near the facility, and they are partners with Omni Source (one of the facility’s recyclers) to make charitable donations to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. The two Hanes facilities have also made donations of fabric to a local church, which was used to make blankets for the homeless.
